Avonmore Computer Network Systems Engineering - Level 7

Security risks are ever present in IT, in an increasingly wide variety of forms and severity. This module deals with their identification, prevention and mitigation. These skills are in demand, both for specialist and generalist staff.

All students will have met security risk assessment and some of the techniques to avoid problems at an elementary level. This module deepens this understanding of the most important techniques in current application: these are fundamental to modern security practice. Successful choice of appropriate technologies requires an understanding of the risks that are being mitigated as well as the available technologies to achieve mitigation. While building on prior knowledge and experience, this module covers these issues in significantly greater depth, with an emphasis on the underlying theory of many technological solutions and on organisational practices and needs.

There are three substantive topics:

  1. Security fundamentals and technologies.
  2. Security policies.
  3. Security implementation.
